When I turn my laptop on it makes an extremely loud grinding noise. It's not high pitches or anything it's just a loud growl. I mean I can here it in the next room. It then stops and I can log in and then it starts again. Since it mainly does it when somethings going on (as in ANY time I turn it on) it's probably the fan right? The noise is coming from the holes where the air comes out.

Any chance it's the CPU? Would getting a new fan/ heat sink help?

I have a Toshiba satellite m35x.

Thanks! (I really just want to know is it probably the fan or not).

It's the harddrive probably. It's dying.

Or maybe it's your optical drive. I had a DVD drive that sounded like a jet engine when I booted my comp. It didn't make the sound when in use...

It could also be a fan..bad bearings do cause grinding noises.

I really should have checked if it was that hard drive before taking it apart. You can access the hard drive by unscrewing one screw on the back of the laptop but to get to the fan you had to remove the keyboard, monitor, and a ton of other things. Since I already did all that I looked around and nobody has replacement fans. The only place I could find it was used on eBay so no thanks. I'm going to clean the fan and the entire inside and then if the noise continues I'll buy a new hard drive.

Fans are very simple devices and will probably out last your CPU.:P

Never mind I probably messed it up even more. I just took the one with the dimmed screen to a repair shop. Still not sure if it's the back light or the inverter.

Terran, you're a fucking retard. Stop trying to act like you know anything about computers, because clearly you don't. Stop trying to copy everything I do. Behavior like that in REAL LIFE is pathetic. This is the Internet. Do the math.

kthx

Where I stated I *messed* up my other PC by taking it apart meaning I don't know a lot about computers and I'm not sure if the one with the dimmed screen is either the back light or inverter which people have told me it could be either.

:/
