An editor in Sri Lanka wrote this article knowing his days were numbered. On Jan 8 this year, he was gunned down. In Sri Lanka, people who tell the truth do not get to live.

So complicated the politics of South Asia. It is a region full of culture and more than its fair share of educated, brilliant men and thinkers. Yet it is a region that has seen and is still seeing the horrors of Partition, and if Partition alone was not enough, there was yet another that saw Bangladesh seperated from Pakistan. And we have Sri Lanka who's determined not to be left out of the action and has been staging a civil war of its own for years. And in the middle of everything, Kashmir festers. Yet the region continues to churn out Man Booker prize winners, poets and intellectuals. Do you see any booker prize winners from the african region?
