1/2 Damage Energy Shield Calculations? 7 replies

Does anyone know whether the 1/2 damage is deducted before or after the armor? It may not seem important, but take the example of a weapon that does 40 damage - if the 1/2 is deducted first, then after 1/2 it's 20, and with 20 armor becomes 0. If it's deducted after the armor, then 20 / 2 becomes 10 damage. Anyone know this?

It could fairly easily be discovered by two people fighting in the MP arena - just hit attack instead of until death with the vulcan cannon :) Heck, if anyone is willing to test this with me, let me know :)

Here is something that I recorded a few days ago.

You have successfully dodged a blow that could have done 142 damage!
The Level 8 Mutalisk hits you with Glave Wurm for 62.

This is with level 3 energy shield.

First, remember that the mutalist may have done slightly more or less damage on the next blow, since I dodged the first one. (note: dodging doesn't do anything; it's just something that happens; as far as I know, you can't consistently dodge and take 0 damage while still dealing damage. in fact, I have never dodged and then dealt damage right after; I always dodge, get hit, then deal damage, with no difference compared to just getting hit and then doing damage).

Enemies do somewhat consistent damage. So it is somewhat*(see important note) safe to assume that the mutalisk was going to do around 142 damage without my shield. Now, since I only take 62 damage, it suggests that the 20 is removed FIRST, and then the damage is halved: 142 - 20 = 122; 122/2 = 61.

To contrast this: consider what happens if you halve it fist: 142/2 = 71; then take off the 20: 71-20 = 51; I have never seen the muta do 51 damage to me.

So I have a pretty good feeling that the 20 is taken off FIRST, and then the total damge is reduced.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: remember that the above calculations are approximations due to the fact that the enemies do a slightly variable amount of damage, and so although the above calculations suggest that the level3 energy shield works by reducing by 20 and then halving, there are not enough consistent calculations to make the evidence overwhelming.

Also, it is not known whether the code will be changed, so even after consistent calculations are made, things could suddenly become different.

For now, I am sticking with the level 3 energy shield. The new armors aren't providing me with anything better at this time, although I have not had a chance to explicitly calculate everything. (see the thread on the new armors for a deeper discussion this. I haven't posted yet, but I'll try to run some tests later on when I have enough credits to try to find evidence for how the armors are behaving).

Good luck in the wastelands!

concerning dodging: I usually (if not always) "dodge" an attack if I am fighting and the anti-bot thing appears. So next time y'all are fighting, record the damage it says you dodged. This should be the original damage that will be dealt to you if you have absolutely no armor on.

Wish I could give you rep or something for the well-thought out post. Thanks, I'll run some numbers myself as well :)

Yeah new armor is not really worth that much. Maybe TS should test these out at higher ranks if he already hasn't?

Yes, I have tested long ago, 20 damage is taken before the 1/2 reduction.

It's the same way it is in Starcraft =.=
