installing linux 21 replies

laptop : acer aspire 3690
OS : vista (ze biatch)
want to install: ubuntu
problem : cant do shiat

i tried burning the image file onto a CD and it wont do a thing, and i dont want dual boot all the forums talk about dual boot, i want to get rid of vista... completely.

any ideas?

Check if your PC is compatible and then just follow a tutorial. There are plenty for Ubuntu.

Go into your BIOS and set your optical drive as the first boot device.

And make sure you don't have an ATI card lol.

Use fdisk from the installer's command line to partition your drive; it's so easy.

Done, installed!

It took 5 minutes to install it =)

BUT THE FREAKING WIFI STILL DOESN'T WORK!!!!! ARG!!!

Just installed it on my laptop. It took me 10 minutes, everything is working well!

Ubuntu is way more user friendly the SUSE, and it depends of what you wanna do with it.

For my server (ftp/http) and my future firewall and home made routeur, I'm using Red Hat, which I woudn't use for a replacement of windows (beurk)

Maybe it has something to do with me installing it in Virtual PC. Ubuntu was really difficult getting it to recognize the network. I installed OpenSUSE and it configured the network automatically.

I used openSUSE for a while, but I think Ubuntu was much easier to set up and get everything running nicely. I wish I had installed the server edition instead of the desktop edition because I can't do any of my LAMP stuff right now. =/

sudo tasksel install lamp-server

and it will install your lamp-server in all its glory (i figure) ... I just installed all the packages/modules I want by hand :)

For a a desktop machine I geuss Ubuntu is ok. The main reason to use ubuntu over Suse is that it used Debian's package manager so you can apt-get anything :). Also Novell isn't respecting the GPL like it should considering it's basing it's OS on code under the GPL.

I would not choose unbuntu mostly because it's based of the unstable branch of debian and I much rather stay with the STABLE branch. So I just install the latest STABLE version of debian whenever I install linux. But it's rare I ever have to install linux for anything else then the configuration of servers.

For UIs I stick to windows just because X is still kind of soso compared to explorer.
