It was everyone. I was performing some unscheduled maintenance to improve server performance. FYI, I have archived forum posts older than about 8 months old...

Why would post counts drop when you deleted/archived old posts?

(The following is from the biggest noob when it comes to databases).
That would, as far as I know, mean the post count was calculated from all the posts the user has made when a page with a post count is requested. Wouldn't it make better sense to use a simple increment system where the post count isn't really linked with the amount of posts a user has in the database?

(The following is from someone who has worked with databases for years now)

I don't think NN forums actually "calculate", every time a page requests a user's post count, the amount of posts this user has made since the last archiving. It would be way too tedious to go through the whole database and find every of his posts. Forums most probably use an auto increment system as you said. However, to keep the post count accurate, every time one or more posts are deleted, the code takes the ID of the user who had posted the concerned thread/reply and modifies his post count in the database consequently. That way, post counts remain accurate, even when posts are deleted/archived.

That said, when Tom purges the posts, he might do it directly from the database. If so, the code isn't run and can't adjust everybody's post count. That time, he can just run a script that will go through the whole database once to recalculate all the post counts. That done, the other system I described above takes the task over.

Hope my pedagogy was good enough and you understood what I explained.

Lesson 1 - Introduction to databases => Done.
